THE WINE

Alkar & Alki

Our first wine was bottled in 2022, and is made from 100% Potamisi grape. We call it Alkar, meaning Protection, Cure, Bastion, referencing Archaic Greece, and the timelessly humanist texts of Homer and Pindar – “κώπαν σχάσον, ταχὺ δ᾽ἄγκυραν ἔρεισονχθονί | πρῴραθε, χοιράδος ἄλκαρ πέτρας” (Pindar, Pythionikais, 10) Hold fast the oar and sink the anchor to the seabed | from the bow, so it may be protection from the hidden rocks.
The same year we also produced a smaller quantity of grapes from our old vines of the Rosaki grape. We call this wine Alki, an etymological cognate of Alkar, meaning courage, strength, aid, and battle. Tinos’ landscapes still evoke the heroic air and atmosphere of the archaic era, despite the island being a palimpsest of natural evolution, history, and civilization. For our upcoming harvests, we plan the winemaking of more indigenous varieties. We aspire for the tastes and aromas of our wines to capture the spirit of the Tinian land, and to convey her rich nutrients and meanings.
